MEMBERSHIP
New River Valley Community Church is a safe place for people who are seeking spiritual truth to hear the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. But communicating this message alone doesn't make us a church. What makes us a church is that we are a community. We have regular attenders and guests, but we also have members.
Four Reasons To Become A Member
A Biblical Reason
The concept of membership is scriptural. Although the term "church member"
is never used in the Bible, the concept is evident throughout the New Testament.
Christians clearly identified themselves with a specific local church and were
challenged to become devoted participants.
A Cultural Reason
It is an antidote to our society. We live in an age when real commitment to
anything, a job...marriage...our country, is rare. This attitude has even
created a generation of people who hop and shop from church to church.
If something doesn't suit at one church, the mindset is "I can always leave
and find another". Membership presents a challenge to get out of the comfort
zone of anonymity and publicly affirm a real commitment to Christ and to a
specific local church body. It is an unselfish decision.
Commitment always builds character.
A Practical Reason
It defines who can be counted on. Formal membership is valuable to the leaders
of NRVCC as they seek to fulfill their God-given task of shepherding.
NRVCC draws the uncommitted - seekers, observers, guests - because of it's
unique services and design. We hope that will always be the case.
However, at some point it is important to identify those who are a part of the
core at NRVCC - those who can be counted on to build and sustain the ministries
of the church.
A Personal Reason
Membership produces spiritual growth. It benefits the individual.
The New Testament places a major emphasis on the need for Christians to be
accountable to each other for spiritual growth. You can't be accountable when
you're not committed to any specific church family.
